The SOLARFLARE name:
Two of SOLARFLARE Communication's founders, Dr. George Zimmerman
and Ben Charny, got their professional start at NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratories in Pasadena, California. While there, they worked
on advancing the state-of-the-art in communications systems
used by deep space probes such as Magellan and Galileo.
The challenges of recovering communications signals from so
far away are quite daunting. And while they developed algorithms
that were effective at removing many sources of noise, one natural
phenomenon eluded even these sophisticated techniques. From
time to time, the Sun emits a coronal discharge - commonly known
as a Solar Flare.
Flares themselves are among the most spectacular disturbances
seen on the Sun. And High-speed solar protons emitted by a Solar
Flare are probably the most potent of the radiation hazards
to space flight. There are many events that may occur on Earth
following a solar flare. In addition to increase in visible
light, minutes later there is a sudden disturbance in Earth's
ionosphere. This, in turn, causes short wave fadeout, resulting
in the loss of long-range communications.
Algorithms developed at SOLARFLARE Communications are similar
to the ones used to communicate with spacecraft. Specifically
these algorithms are expert at removing noise from a communication
channel in a hardware efficient way. In recognition of their
old and powerful foe, George and Ben decided to name their new
company after the Solar Flare. For while a Solar Flare may indeed
be a disruptive force to communications, SOLARFLARE Communications
is a disruptive force in the Communications market.
